We inspire children and young people to develop a life-long enjoyment of music.  We promote the positive and enjoyable aspects of musical and cultural engagement.  We work with a partnership of local, regional, and national organisations, working together to build an inspiring and inclusive programme of music-making.

Our mission is to create opportunities for all children to engage with a diverse musical culture, enabling lasting participation in and enjoyment of music. Through music, we will make a positive impact on children's lives and the communities in which they live.

The Plymouth Music Education Hub (PMEH) comprises a wide range of music organisations working in partnership to provide high-quality music education for the children and young people of Plymouth. Our hub, led by Plymouth Youth Music Service (PYMS), currently engages over 4000 children and young people in weekly musical activities across the city.

Introduction to the music offered in Plymouth

The Plymouth Music Education Hub (PMEH) is one of 120 hubs covering all local authorities in England. It is the amorphous gathering of all those in Plymouth who wish to provide children and young people access to musical expertise and inspiration that reflect the world in which we live.

Plymouth Youth Music Service (PYMS) is the hub-led organisation. PYMS is accountable to the Department for Education (DfE), through Arts Council England, for what music education takes place in Plymouth Local Authority.

Partners

All schools are, by default, partners within the hub. They are one subset of the many organisations within the hub, and they take responsibility for delivering the music curriculum specifically.

They may choose to deliver this in-house, via class teachers or music specialists. They may choose to provide some of the curriculum through buying in expert partners.

They also lead on extra-curricular musical activities within their school and, again, may choose to provide, or buy in the provision of, music by delivery partners.

There are a range of delivery partners within Plymouth. PYMS is one of these partners, but there are many more. PYMS helps by signposting and connecting partners as appropriate for all children and young people, whether within formal or informal settings, in school time or outside of it.

Opportunities

PMEH is obliged to create opportunities by ensuring all partners, including schools, individuals, and organisations, are working collaboratively for the benefit of children and young people in Plymouth. These opportunities range from individual, small group lessons (through school or privately) to targeted projects, performances, choirs, ensembles, and First Access.

Accountability

PMEH is accountable to the DfE and has to report music activities quarterly and return data annually. Although a school may be wholly responsible for a musical activity, as a partner within the hub, that information still needs to be collected, collated, and reported by the lead partner, PYMS.
