Perinatal Mental Health Team - Livewell Southwest
This team works to prevent, detect and manage mental health problems that complicate pregnancy and the postpartum year. The overriding goal is to prevent admissions to acute mental health wards by intervening with care and support to keep them safe, well and at home.

The community-based team comprises psychiatrists, a psychologist, perinatal mental health nurses, a specialist midwife, family support workers, and a team secretary. They work closely with midwives at Derriford Hospital and community colleagues caring for women who become unwell for the first time during and after their pregnancy and those who have had past experiences of mental illness.
It also supports women supported by our community mental health colleagues who are planning a pregnancy and those who are currently pregnant or have babies up to the age of 12 months.
Referrals can be made by any professionals or services within the Plymouth area who are supporting women around the time of childbirth where there are concerns about their mental wellbeing.
If admission to an acute unit is thought necessary, the team supports the woman and her family through this and also provides support for up to 12 months after the birth following an assessment of postnatal mental health by the nurses.
