Young Carers Action Day

16 March 2021

Plymouth's Time 4 U Project are now gearing up for the annual Young Carer's Action Day organised by the Carers Trust. The team have been busy developing activities for members of the young carer's project to participate in throughout the week starting Monday, 15 March. The theme for this year is 'Protect Young Carers' Futures'. This is an acknowledgement of the skills that young people have gained through their caring role.

Plymouth City Council's Young Carer's Team will be providing a variety of activities throughout the week. We will be running small arts, sports and chill-out sessions at our Youth Centre alongside Quizzes through Zoom sessions. We will be holding a competition where young carers get to design their T-shirt, which we will print for them.

One to One sessions are offered for those that need it and our phone support will be available all week. We will also be offering online support through Zoom for young carers to access.

Time 4 U partners Barnardo's and Improving Lives - Caring for Carers have accessed funding to support a Skills Journal project. There will be an online journaling workshop from 6-7 pm on 16 March to enable Young Carers to identify their skills gained, use their skills journal effectively and identify any transferable skills and future aspirations.

We are looking forward to celebrating the lives of young carers, raising awareness of the roles they undertake and enabling them to recognise the valuable skills they have learnt through their caring role.

If you would like to put in a request for service for a young carer to the Time 4U project please complete an EHAT and email to gateway@plymouth.gov.uk

Census 2021

Ensuring we #CountCarersIn on 21 March 2021

The census is taking place on Sunday 21 March 2021 and we want to ensure that everyone looking after someone else identifies as an unpaid carer when completing their form. This is hugely important because the census provides a vital opportunity for the number of carers, and their caring situations, to be officially recognised and better understood.

Census 2021 will inform decisions on services that shape our communities, such as healthcare, education, and transport, and it also provides a more accurate and up to date figure for the number of carers in the UK. Census findings are used widely by national and local government and many others - including national and local carers organisations.

The opportunity to complete the census only comes around once every 10 years. There is a specific question (question 24 in England and Wales) which asks whether you look after or give help or support to someone else - and the number of hours per week that you care for.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) runs the census in England and Wales and is independent of the Government. Your details are protected by law and the information published is always anonymous. The census 2021 will be the first digital-first census.

You will receive more information from the ONS on completing the census. But if you need help or have any questions, visit www.census.gov.uk

Young Carers Support Hub

The Young Carers Support Hub is a new online area on the Plymouth Online Directory (POD) which holds all the relevant content related to young carers.

If you have any feedback on the POD pages or would like to suggest content, then please email commissioning@plymouth.gov.uk with the subject: Young Carers Support Hub (POD).

Young Carers COVID-19 Impact Survey

Plymouth HYPE needs your help to reach out to young carers within the Plymouth area. We want to know how lockdown has been for you and to help us to learn how to support you as lockdown eases.

Please encourage your young carers to complete the short survey and if you would like to discuss this any further or know anymore please do not hesitate to get in touch with us, we would love to hear from you.

The survey closes on 31 March 2021

Mind The Gap

The Mind The Gap programme was developed to deliver the NHS Long-Term Plan Commitment to improve identification and support of carers from communities less likely to use and/or have positive experiences of services. NHSEI funded a joint bid between Plymouth and Torbay focusing on migrant, refugee and asylum seekers and BAME communities.

We will be launching our webpage shortly as a legacy of this project and the continued work that is taking place to engage with these communities.

EHAT

Early Help means taking action to support a child, young person or their family early in the life of a problem, as soon as it emerges. It can be required at any stage in a child's life from pre-birth to adulthood and applies to any problem or need that the family cannot deal with or meet on their own.

The Early Help Assessment Tool (EHAT) is an assessment for multi-agency support.

Wellbeing for Education Return

Webinar CPD and support for Plymouth schools and settings.

On 4 August, the DfE wrote to the Chief Executive at Plymouth City Council to notify of additional grant funding to enable the Local Authority to work with local partners and to tailor and deliver wellbeing and mental health training and support for education settings.

DSL's, SLT and Teaching staff may need additional support to recognise and understand the range of children and young people's reactions and know how to support them, their parents and carers, and their colleagues.

The Wellbeing for Education Return project seeks to better equip education settings to support children and young people's wellbeing, resilience and recovery in the context of COVID-19 and associated measures.

There are two elements to the project:

  • A national training package, which will provide guidance and resources for education staff on responding to the impact of COVID-19 on the wellbeing of students
  • The Local Authority will put in place one or more local experts who will work with partners and deliver to leads in education settings and provide ongoing advice and support until March 2021.
  • The Zone Plymouth are undertaking the delivery of this project.

The Zone has been engaging with and supporting schools and settings across the city for 4 years via Progeny, in partnership with the wider system, supporting the Emotional Health and Wellbeing of Whole School Communities.

Wellbeing for Education Return aims to equip nominated education staff with the knowledge and skills to introduce and contextualise clear, coherent information and resources to their settings' staff and to support and enable discussions with children and young people, parents and carers.

The Zone Plymouth will provide ongoing support to maintained schools and academies through the Autumn and Spring terms (2020/21). Please read the support offer attachment.

Wellbeing for Education Return is currently still being delivered to Education settings with ongoing support continuing to be available including recorded versions of the webinars, access to advice and guidance along with an offer of targeted support for the whole school community.

Please note that all bookings and further information is via Jodie Frost at The Zone Plymouth. Email Jodie.frost@thezoneplymouth.co.uk or call 07158206626.
