Improve Access and Inclusion in GP Services for Autistic People
Plymouth Autism Partnership Board are working with Plymouth Autism Spectrum Service (PASS), on an ambitious project to Improve Access and Inclusion in GP Services for Autistic People.
We recognise that autism not being understood or accommodated can lead to barriers to access to health services and we want to make a positive change.
To start, we want to learn what your experiences have been in accessing GP services as an autistic person.

Young Carer Action Day - What we got up too
For young carer action day, Plymouth Youth Service spent our weekly sessions making scented soap bars for some self-care time, fruity milkshakes, enjoyed games of mixed sports in our sports hall and hosted an interactive quiz online for carers to join from home. We also asked the young carers to write on whiteboards what they would like from sessions moving forward.
The service aims to provide respite to young carers, whilst providing long-term support to help them deal with issues that affect their daily lives, build resilience, increase confidence and enable them to have opportunities that they would ordinarily miss out on.
We are fortunate to be able to support young carers from the age of 8 right up until they reach 18. Their caring responsibilities can be a part of their entire childhood and carry on into adulthood so consistent, long-term support is valuable.
The Youth Work Team works with Barnardo's, Hamoaze House and Improving Lives which forms the Time 4 U Alliance. This partnership allows for a streamlined approach to deciding which expert support is most appropriate for young carers and making more time for them.
Carers awareness training for professionals
Working in partnership with Barnardo's Young Carers Service, Caring for Carers support people and organisations that work with carers in Plymouth. We can provide a range of training and support on carer issues and run workshops on interactions with carers. Areas that the training covers are:
- who is a carer and what are their issues
- what services and support are available locally
- how you can support carers
- referring carers to the relevant services
We can undertake presentations at staff meetings and if certain staff members have a key role in working with carers, we can arrange to meet with them 1:1 to discuss the opportunities and resources available.
Due to the current climate, we also offer training sessions via Zoom or Microsoft teams
We offer a 30-minute presentation which encompasses a 20-minute presentation with 10 minutes of Q&A after.

Latest census data
Unpaid care by age, sex and deprivation, England and Wales: Census 2021
The provision of unpaid care at the country, regional and local authority level and analysis on deprivation with comparisons to Census 2001 and 2011.
On Census Day 2021 (21 March 2021) there were approximately 4.7 million unpaid carers in England and approximately 310,000 unpaid carers in Wales; when age-standardised this equates to 8.9% and 10.5% of the usual resident population, aged 5 years and over, in each country respectively.
Carrers Trust - Annual survey
Carers Trust works to transform the lives of unpaid carers. It partners with its UK-wide network of local carer organisations to provide funding and support, deliver innovative and evidence-based programmes, raise awareness, and influence policy.
Their vision is that unpaid carers are heard and valued, with access to support, advice and resources to enable them to live fulfilled lives.
They host the Young Carers Alliance, a network of over 150 organisations and 300 individuals committed to improving identification and support for young carers and young adult carers.
