Taking time away from caring - the importance of carers having a break

It is important for your own wellbeing to be able to take breaks from the caring role. Time away from an unpaid caring role is sometimes called a short break, respite, or replacement care.

Making time for yourself, however, to catch up with friends, family, or simply rest is often difficult, but it can improve how you feel. Carers often neglect their own needs.

Having a break from caring leaves many carers feeling that they have renewed energy and can face whatever comes across their path.

There are many different ways to take a break, and many carers will need to make alternative arrangements for the person they care for.

To help you with this, we have produced a Respite Support Directory.

You might also wish to read the Carers First Pocket Guide (PDF, 2 MB).
