Why the community needs us
Plymouth Dance creates and delivers the most exciting, innovative, and accessible dance offering for our community. So many people don't have access to the transformational benefits of dance as part of their everyday lives, such as the freedom to create and the opportunity to improve mental, physical, and emotional health and well-being while decreasing social isolation and exclusion. We know that it's vital that more people and communities have opportunities to watch, be part of, and perform dance.
Get involved
There are a range of opportunities across the city to participate in classes and workshops in a variety of styles and at various levels of expertise. From after-school dance clubs to private dance schools and youth groups, children and young people can enjoy ballet, tap, jazz, bharata natyam, contemporary, and hip-hop dance.
If you enjoy social dancing, there are classes in ballroom, ceroc, salsa, and tango, as well as adult ballet and tap classes. As a dance student, graduate, or professional, there are workshops, master classes, intensive courses, and a range of other professional development opportunities.
Our Tea Dances
'Tea Dances with a Twist!' is an intergenerational, inclusive dance and social event that is primarily for participants over 50 and accessible for people who are in a wheelchair and/or living with autism, dementia, Alzheimer's, or Parkinson's. We aim to deliver a regular, fun, social dance event that enables attendees to improve their physical and mental health and wellbeing while decreasing loneliness, social isolation, and social exclusion.
Whether you are a complete beginner or fancy brushing up on your footwork, you will be led through a variety of dance styles, including the waltz, jive, cha cha, Charleston, lindy hop, and hip hop. No experience or partner is necessary.
We can deliver 'Tea Dance with a Twist!' events for commissioners. To date, we have presented events at Drake's Circus Shopping Centre, Plymouth Indoor Market, Tavistock Town Hall, and the Respect Festival. Each event is bespoke and can include live and/or recorded music.
We are also able to deliver Bitesize Tea Dances with a Twist! in care homes and residential settings, providing the opportunity to connect with others, participate in fun, accessible sessions, and improve their mental, physical, and emotional health and well-being within a friendly environment. You have the option to provide tea (and cake) before and after the events to make it more of a social occasion, where residents can invite family and friends to join them.
The delivery of a 1-hour 'Tea Dance with a Twist! session will be brought to your attention by two of our highly skilled practitioners. The residents can take part in a range of dance styles and eras and enjoy the music; the content of the sessions is designed to be fully accessible to all abilities. We require a designated space to carry out the session and a minimum of one member of staff present at each session (and hopefully join in!)
Professional development
Plymouth Dance offers a range of ways to develop professionally as a dance student, graduate, or practitioner, including the volunteer training programme, internships, CPD training days, master classes, and residencies.
