The wheelchair service is for residents currently registered with a GP in the Plymouth, South Hams and West Devon areas.

The service will provide you with all NHS wheelchair services, including

  • clinical assessments
  • specialist seating
  • delivery
  • repairs and maintenance
  • collection when the wheelchair is no longer required

We provide a free collections service. Wheelchairs are valuable, so we collect and recycle and refurbish them to an as-new condition for re-issue.

Referrals and Assessments

If you are an existing service user, you can self-refer into the service, or be referred by a qualified healthcare professional, who will send you a letter or call you to let you know if you meet the NHS Eligibility Criteria for a wheelchair.

A wheelchair assessment establishes your clinical needs and a prescription is made for the right wheelchair for you.

Your assessment will take place at our wheelchair clinic or another appropriate location, i.e. school or health care setting.  Home assessments can be undertaken only in certain circumstances.  This will be agreed after triage by the clinical team.

When we call you to arrange your assessment appointment, you'll be given a choice of location and time slot.

Repairs

If you need to arrange a repair on your wheelchair, you can call the main switchboard number 0808 196 2696 between 8.00am and 11.00pm, seven days a week, including bank holidays.

When you phone for an emergency repair, your message will be sent to the duty field service engineer, who will call you back within one hour.

The emergency repair service is intended to support you within your home only. We may be able to help you if you have broken down at another location but this is not always possible.  You may also need to get yourself home, with help from a friend, carer or via public transport.
