Young Carer's Health Champion Poem
Before You Assume
By Laura Redman
You hold out your hand, faced with a smile
Expecting me to take your support as we talk for a while
The one to my left is grateful for your gift
But right, and I decline the offering.
We'll hear it again, like we heard it before,
With the same help being offered, we're beginning to bore.
It's not what we all want, but you didn't ask
Just assumed we all matched and hope you would pass.
If you care that I care then make it seem that way
Don't hand out the same advice as if it'll save the day
We're all human, living our lives
If you care that I care then simply take five
Ask how I am, what support I really need,
Then think through your offering before you proceed.
It only takes a minute to show you care
Keep the questions open so you can't compare.
We're not all the same and what we need is different too,
So make sure you check, before you assume.
Notre Dame School gains Young Carers in Schools Silver Award
Notre Dame School in Derriford has been given a Silver Award for their work to make sure students don't miss out on an education because they are young carers.
The Young Carers in Schools programme helps primary and secondary schools improve outcomes for young carers and celebrates good practice through the Young Carers in Schools Award.
To achieve their Silver Award, Notre Dame has demonstrated that it supports young carers in many ways, including awareness raising with pupils and staff, and by building links within the local community.
Young carers are consulted with, and vital information is made available to pupils and families, letting them know where to go for help.
Young Carers' lead at the school, Clare Sampson, said:
"Applying for the Silver Award has helped us to shape and improve our provision. We have a great Young Carers' team who are all committed to ensuring our young carers get the support they need to succeed in school."
One such young carer is Year 8 student Danielle who said:
"The Young Carers group have cared and looked after me for the past two years. Mrs Brady has let us tell her our problems and helped us find solutions. I am really looking forward to going on a respite trip with the group when Covid is over."
The hidden lives of young carers
A feature looks at the hidden lives of young carers. It says the latest census shows there are 166,000 young carers in England but according to recent research the actual figure may be as many as 800,000. The piece references the LGA's previous estimate of a £3.1 billion funding gap for children's services by 2025.
Carers Trust Survey - supporting someone with a drinking problem
Please help publicise a Carers Trust Survey of unpaid young and young adult carers (aged 12-24), who support someone with a drinking problem in England.
The survey will be used to:
- Help us influence decision makers like the government.
- Highlight the needs of young carers and young adult carers in the media and on social media.
- Help us to think of and fund new ways of supporting young carers and young adult carers.
The survey is easy, anonymous, and only takes around five minutes to complete. The closing date is 5 July 2021.
