Legislation - Plymouth Young Carers
Young carers and their families in England have specific rights to assessment and support under the Children and Families Act (2014) and the Care Act (2014).

Local authorities must take 'reasonable steps' (Children and Families Act) to identify young carers in their area who have support needs. In Plymouth, the local authority has a Young Carers Champion who works closely with young carers' leads across schools to identify and support young carers. It is recognised in Plymouth that school is a place that can make a significant difference to the wellbeing and attainment of young carers through a holistic approach to support. In Plymouth, there are nearly 1000 young carers, with 27% having a special educational need and/or disability.
