Specialist Parent Advocacy

Helping parents with a learning disability who are part of a Child Protection Plan, or undergoing Child Care Proceedings, are given a fair assessment. This means:

• making sure that parents understand the concerns of the local authority
• making sure that information is accessible to the parents
• making sure parents have a fair opportunity to address the concerns on the Child Protection Plan
• that parents can access support appropriate to their needs
• that professionals are making reasonable adjustments when working with parents
• supporting parents at meetings to have their say and to express their point of view

Parent volunteers

We have many exciting opportunities for anyone who would like to make a real difference in someone's life. We are always looking for passionate and dedicated individuals to join our team.

Parent volunteers can make a difference in so many different ways. The provision of ongoing emotional and practical support for a parent with a learning disability should never be underestimated.

Many of our parents have experienced the difficult trauma of losing their children, and are at risk of being left to cope on their own. Having a volunteer could mean they are able to work through what has happened more easily, decreasing feelings of isolation and enabling them to access the support they need.

WISER

WISER stands for Women in Safe, Empowering Relationships. It is a new project within the Parent Project.

WISER is for women with learning disabilities or borderline learning disabilities who are survivors of domestic abuse. WISER delivers accessible and engaging awareness courses around domestic abuse, offers women's support groups for survivors, and provides easy-to-read information around domestic abuse. WISER seeks to nurture the confidence and wellbeing of the women involved, supporting them to understand their worth and to make long-term, empowering changes so that they may live safer and more fulfilled lives.

Training

The Plymouth Parent Advocacy Project can offer training to professionals, staff, and volunteers working with parents with learning difficulties.
